Strong and Courageous, The Story of You
Isaiah 40:28-31

         We have spent the past seven weeks looking at different characters in the bible and exploring ways that they were strong and courageous.

If the Bible was still being written today, how would your story read? Do you want to know what I think? I strongly believe if the Bible were still being written today, people of the future would see YOU as strong and courageous as well. How do I know? I’m so glad you asked! I know because every person has a story and every personal story has the narrative of a God who loves woven throughout.  I don’t know every story represented here in the congregation and I especially don’t know every story of those of you watching online. This I do know. I know the character of God and I know that God loves us with an incomprehensible love!

I don’t know if you caught this or not, but every story we studied during this series, was actually a love story between God and humans. Joshua was a story of a God who demonstrated His love by reminding Joshua to be strong and courageous because God was always with him. God literally fought all of Joshua’s battles for him… What battles are YOU facing today? God demonstrated His Love to Joseph by making him successful in spite of all the bad that life kept dishing on him. Does it feel like life keeps kicking you down? God demonstrated love to the Unnamed Slave Girl by inspiring someone to write about her faithfulness and not allowing her to be forgotten. Are you feeling like you are forgotten? Jacob? God demonstrated His love to Jacob by allowing Jacob to wrestle with him and not getting dead! In the end God blessed Jacob. What are you wrestling with God about right now? Do you long to hear God’s blessing on your life? God demonstrated his love to Peter by forgiving his denial of Jesus and allowing Peter to make amends by giving him a job to do. “Peter, do you love me? Feed my sheep.” Do you need to feel God’s forgiveness right now? God loved Paul so much that he literally knocked Paul over to get his attention and prevent him from taking the wrong path in his life. Do you feel God redirecting your footsteps? And God loved the Samaritan woman at the well by placing her in a position to meet and have a dialog with her savior face to face. Do you feel an overwhelming need for a savior right now?

In all these stories, God allowed God’s love to be woven throughout the humanness of each story… And these stories were just the tip of the iceberg! God is weaving God’s love story into our lives as well. God is crazy in love with us! When Moses asked God at the burning bush, who should I say sent me, God said “I am.” “Tell the people I AM sent you. I AM… That’s my most favorite name for God! I AM. You know what that tells me? God wants us to fill in the blanks! Are you discouraged? God says I AM your comforter. Are you afraid for the future? God says I AM your future. Do you need healing? God says I AM your healer!

So, what does all this have to do with eagles? I’m so glad you asked! How do we get ourselves in a position to let God work in our lives? Our scripture reading this morning says to wait. “but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength…” I don’t know about you, but I HATE waiting! It seems like that’s all I do in my life. I wait in the grocery store line… only to check myself out (UGH!) I wait on hold when I’m trying to deal with customer service. I had to wait four years in seminary to become an ordained Cumberland Presbyterian Pastor. Then I had to wait almost five additional months because Covid put a hold on everything. Yet, in God’s timing and in God’s way, I will be ordained and officially installed in this church at 5:00 this evening. I can just hear God saying to me… if you would have WAITED on MY timing… you wouldn’t have gotten so stressed out!

but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength,

                  they shall mount up with wings like eagles,

         they shall run and not be weary,

                  they shall walk and not faint.

You see, I have to understand, and perhaps you can relate… God does all the work! If I just wait… then I can see God working God’s Kingdom work through me. Can I tell you, this call absolutely terrifies me? A moment of transparency… I have really been wrestling with this call lately. I have been questioning my ability to perform the task of pastor! I had a dream a couple of weeks ago that I was a conductor of this passenger train with all of you in it! I’ll be dogone, if I didn’t derail that crazy train in my dream! And God says wait, don’t get ahead of me. God says let me work through you. Just be a vessel, I’ll do the rest.

But this isn’t really about me… what happened in you when you journaled the stories from this series? What stood out for you? Can you, through your daily gratitudes see God’s love weaving through your story? What kingdom work do you feel God calling you to? What does it mean for YOU to wait? By the way, don’t be looking for the big, knock you off your horse, new direction approach from God. Please don’t waste your life away waiting for God to reveal to you that big thing God wants you to do. Yeah, Paul took the gospel to the gentiles, which eventually lead to this movement known as the Christian movement. But God uses us in small ways as well. The unnamed servant girl didn’t do much. All she did was suggest that Naaman visit Elisha for God’s healing.

God gives all of us small opportunities every day. A smile and a thank you to that overworked cashier at the grocery store. And don’t tell me people can’t see your smile through your mask (cover your mouth and smile) see, it’s impossible to hide a smile. Perhaps the opportunity comes in the form of a phone call from a friend you haven’t heard from in a long while. Perhaps they called because they are lonely from the pandemic. Your encouraging words are building God’s Kingdom. Opportunities occur when we pray for that guy that just cut us off on 121. You don’t know, perhaps he is dealing with a personal emergency.

  • Our journal prompts are:
  • 5 Daily Gratitudes
  • When God tells you I AM, how do you fill in the blanks?
  • What does it look like to wait on the Lord?
  • How is God calling you to serve in building God's Kingdom

“Have you not known? Have you not heard?

         The LORD is the everlasting God,

                  the Creator of the ends of the earth.

         He does not faint or grow weary;

                  his understanding is unsearchable.

He gives power to the faint,

                  and strengthens the powerless.

Even youths will faint and be weary,

                  and the young will fall exhausted;

but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength,

                  they shall mount up with wings like eagles,

         they shall run and not be weary,

                  they shall walk and not faint.

                                                                        AMEN
